The Smart Airport Landing System (SALS) design allows landing aircraft to exit the active runway at a greater speed.  As a result, air traffic control personnel can clear more departing aircraft for takeoff between arrivals, using the additional 25-60 seconds gained from having a cleared runway. The Smart Airport Landing System  will redesign and configure runways and taxiways to include new technologies to better manage air traffic. The Smart Airport Landing System will take full advantage of the The Landing Exit Way Integrated System (LEWIS).  This state-of-the-art technology and LEWIS computer system will communicate the best landing solution to aircraft, runway and control tower.  When completed, the Smart Airport Landing System will automate and safely increase airport operations worldwide.

As airport managers and city mayors struggle to balance growth and cost, the Smart Runway potentially will solve both problems.  It will reduce airport congestion and departure delays.  Land and water-locked airports can once again expand services without the inconvenience of relocating communities and businesses. Airports can expect up to a 35 percent traffic count increase (15 additional flights per hour) on an existing runway.
